What is Net Zero?
When a building reaches Net Zero it balances opposite sides of the equation:
CO2 Emitted = CO2 Sequestered or Offset.
A Net Zero building is optimally energy efficient and is either fully powered from on-site and/or off-site renewable energy sources, or includes carbon offsets.
Generally, this is achieved by first making energy efficiency improvements, then installing on-site renewable energy, and finally participating in the construction of off-site renewable development or carbon sequestration efforts to offset any remaining emissions.
Key Definitions
Net Zero Ready Building (ZRB):
A residential or commercial building that has taken energy efficiency to its reasonable, economic maximum, where it makes sense to stop saving energy because making it from renewable energy sources would be less expensive.
Net Zero Energy Building (ZEB):
A ZEB is a ZRB supplied with all the energy needed through renewable energy using owned generation assets or through the purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) that offset CO2 emissions from non-renewable energy used on site.
Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs):
Developed to represent the economic value of the “green” component associated with making electricity from renewable energy sources. Those required by policies to meet Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) can buy RECs to meet compliance targets if they cannot reach them by generating renewable energy.
Bringing Net Zero to the Midwestern Mainstream
As we enter the 2020s the obstacles and misconceptions about reaching Net Zero are disappearing. The cost, payback, and technology have never been more favorable, and it has become much easier to bring the ZEB to fruition. ERG has over 40 years of experience in building efficiency and renewable energy sourcing and can help you reach Net Zero Energy in your building.
Net Zero Consulting can be done pre- or post-construction. Even well-established facilities can take huge leaps in the realm of responsible energy management. The solution involves an integrative design driven by economics. All costs must be considered (first cost, energy cost, maintenance cost, life cycle cost, etc.) Every building is different and your building will benefit from a tailored solution. With the right guidance our clients reduce their environmental impact and receive an economic benefit.
