Energy Resources Group (ERG) is a certified Commissioning Authority (CxA) as authorized by the Associated Air Balance Council, the world’s leading association of test and balance agencies. Led by our President, Tim Michels, ERG has been helping reduce buildig energy consumption for over 40 years, which includes a wide range of commissioning experience. As a founding member of the St. Louis Chapter of the USGBC, Tim has long been aware of the value of properly commissioned buildings. He effectively started commissioning work by solving specific Andover 256 building automation system problems for the Missouri Botanical Garden in 1996. With the onset of LEED building certifications, ERG began providing commissioning related services to its client base as value added services to its energy consulting capabilities.
ERG brings its focus on energy and cost – and its depth of understanding of building equipment – to the wider sphere of building commissioning . By hiring ERG as your CxA, you are prioritizing the energy impacts of building system designs. Getting us involved early makes sure you get the well-performing building you want.
ERG specializes in development of clear Owners Project Requirements (OPR) documents that guide the development of the Basis of Design (BOD). We have the technical capacity to speak to system designers and fully evaluate the energy use impact of the proposed designs. Having ERG at the table in the early design charrettes brings efficiency expertise, technical capacity, and true innovation to the discovery process. ERG is at home in the role of a CxA – quality assurance – advocating for the Owner’s Project Requirements, especially those related to the final efficiency and comfort of the building. We also understand operators and the trainings they need once the building is built. Our work in energy auditing and implementation of our discovered energy efficiency measures (EEMs) requires in-depth work with site-staff, as buildings only operate well when the operators fully understand the building systems.
In the role of CxA, ERG typically pays for its services many times over, suggesting energy-saving design changes that also reduce up-front costs, such as spotting over-sized equipment when it’s proposed, rectifying low-efficiency piping and duct-run specifications, and identifying the unique overlooked resources at your site that can integrate and transform designs into more efficient, forward-looking innovative solutions.
